Edmund Rice Community

The Edmund Rice Community (ERC), established at Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School in 1996, commits itself to the ideals of prayer, community, and service in the tradition of Br. Edmund Ignatius Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers.

The ERC is composed of approximately thirty adults and students. Adult membership consists of the professed Christian Brothers at ACND and the Associates of Edmund Rice in Miami. Student membership consists of young men and women (juniors, seniors, and alumni) who have demonstrated serious desire for deepening their spiritual lives, mature and moral character, effective Christian compassion and leadership, and a positive influence within the school or community.

New membership in the ERC is usually sought in May for the following school year. Candidates for membership may be nominated by any present member; final selection is made by the Brothers and Associates. In addition to the nomination process, any student who expresses sincere interest in joining is also guaranteed consideration for membership.

Adult and senior members share responsibility for leading the meetings each year. Meetings are held one Sunday a month (twice a month in January and February in preparation for the HungerFest). At each meeting we pray and reflect together on the words, teachings, and actions of Jesus so that He may influence our lives more deeply. We also pray regularly for ERC members, past and present, and for our school and the larger community. Time is often then allotted for consideration of Scripture and/or the life, work, and spirit of Edmund Ignatius Rice. Most of our meetings also involve sponsoring, planning, or performing acts of service, while some are primarily social or recreational. Over the years we have organized clothing and food drives, disaster relief efforts, landscaping projects or maintenance assistance at neighboring inner-city Catholic grammar schools, visits to a senior citizen center, teacher appreciation and "cheer up" letters, and the annual Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame HungerFest to raise awareness and money for the missions in Haiti and Peru and to help the homeless of Miami at Camillus House and the Miami Rescue Mission.

Each year at the school's Mass celebrating the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice (May 5), the Brothers renew their vows, the Associates renew their promises, and the student members of the ERC renew their commitment to the goals of our community.

Each member commits himself or herself to engagement in prayer and service far beyond the limitations of the monthly meetings of the Edmund Rice Community. Moreover, graduating members are formally commissioned each May to go forth and be fruitful in continuing to bring the spirit of Edmund and the Good News of God's love to our brothers and sisters wherever we find ourselves, and especially to the poor.
